Social Studies teacher Marc Brasof has designed an exercise to illustrate how campaign finance operates. Based on new school legislation, he, with the help of a PennCORD mini-grant, implemented a program in which each student in the school will be assigned a $5.00 voucher during a simulated election, which they may contribute to a candidate, or special interest group. This funding may be used for campaign efforts and/or the creation of a program to address the interest group’s issue. Under strict regulations established by a recently passed public financing law, this money can be used to purchase advertising materials and space in-house to simulate a real election. An accounting and price system is already in development.
