Inauguration Day Programming at the National Constitution CenterAmerica I AM: The African American ImprintBeginning on January 15, 2009, the National Constitution Center will host the world debut of America I AM: The African American Imprint, celebrating 400 years of African American contributions to this country. The exhibition will present a historical continuum of pivotal moments in courage, conviction, and creativity that solidifies the undeniable imprint of African Americans across the nation and around the world. Featuring more than 300 artifacts culled from every period of U.S. history, the exhibit will include objects, texts, religion, music, narration and media.
ADDRESS AMERICA: Six Words to Inspire a Nation SMITH Magazine and the Constitution Center have teamed up for a new project, ADDRESS AMERICA: Six Words to Inspire a Nation, which asks the country to suggest the half dozen words they hope to hear in President-elect Obama’s Inaugural speech on January 20, 2009. Morning Program (Kirby Auditorium) 9 am Find out what to expect in Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address as a panel of local experts discuss the highly anticipated speech and expectations for the new administration.
Oath of Office and Your Six Words (Grand Hall Overlook) 10 am to 2 pmTake the official Oath of Office to become the next president of the United States! Visitors will have the chance to stand behind the presidential podium to swear while their image is projected on a screen above.
As part of the Center’s ADDRESS AMERICA initiative, guests can then recite their six words about the future of our nation.
Picture with the President (Locations TBD) 10 am to 2 pm Have your photograph taken with a cutout of President Barack Obama in Historic Philadelphia! Visitors can start a scrapbook collection of photos during a scavenger hunt throughout the historic district, beginning under the “We the People” wall at the National Constitution Center.
Presidential Seal Activity Table (Grand Hall Overlook) 10am to 2 pmDesign your own presidential seal while you learn more about this historic symbol.
Transfer of Powers Program (Grand Hall Overlook) 11 am and 1pmDuring this interactive program, guests can take a closer look at historic moments in America when Executive power was transferred and the nation was introduced to a new president. Participants will also explore past inaugural addresses and presidential legacies.
Inauguration Viewing (Locations TBD) 12 pmWitness a moment in history at the National Constitution Center, as the Inauguration is broadcast on television screens throughout the building.
Breaking Barriers Show (Grand Hall Overlook) 12 pm and 2 pmParticipate in the Center’s Breaking Barriers Show and take an inside look at Thurgood Marshall, Bessie Coleman, Jackie Robinson, and other extraordinary African Americans throughout history. Visitors will see what issues they faced and the rights they gained for all African Americans, and even have the chance to experience some "famous firsts" for themselves.
Student Journalists (Overlook-I2 connection) 11:30 and 12:30PennCORD brings you two high school student news correspondents to interview visitors at the National Constitution Center about their reactions to the Inauguration. Fellow students from Springfield High School in Delaware County will be at the Inauguration with the Close Up Foundation and will report live via the web to the Center and classrooms throughout Pennsylvania. Watch them as they experience and report back on this historic day.
